- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Philip G. Duffy -- This Edition of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Emipre Not up to Book's Potential : Gibbon's History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is a classic in literature and history. While the language is 18th century and challenging, Gibbon's insights are brilliant. This book strongly influenced the founding of the United States. There is a real need for an edition that can reach modern readers. This edition is not it. In addition to annoying and discrediting typos, its major limitation is that it is simply a hard copy that can be downloaded to an electronic reading device. Where are the maps to show where the referenced places are located? Where is the table showing the succession of emperors and how they met their death? I would place this edition in the "dumb eBook" category - so much opportunity and yet so little imagination. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Martin W. Novak -- Beyond a Classic : I'm a total history wonk. Decline and Fall is something I've wanted to read for some time. I bought a print copy at an excellent price, but the print was so small.... God bless Kindle for making these things more accessable. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2013 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Leland Somers -- This is a classic work of a brilliant historian. : One of the great things about this work is that it is not just a list of dates with historical events attached as footnotes. This book details much of what was happening around the empire as it was collapsing. We need something like this written about the rise and fall of the American Empire. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- 1 of 6 down : From the rise of Augustus to the age of Constantine; there are so many reasons why the Empire of Rome fell, and it's due to it's own internal decay. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Daniel N. Copp -- Tiptoe in : Everyone with even the slightest interest in the history of the Roman Empire should at least tiptoe into Gibbon. I had intended to test the waters for at least a decade, so when the demands of routine work subsided somewhat, I bought the first volume. That effort wasn't successful. Too deep: I just wasn't ready for such serious material, especially after eight in the evening. So retreating to warmer, shallower waters, I purchased the unabridged CD, and once attuned to the pretentious accent of the reader, I was captivated by Gibbon's astounding erudition and literary passion. Now that I've finished the first volume, I'll go back and read the most interesting chapters, especially Gibbon's analysis of early Christianity from Constantine through Julian. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Flyerjeff -- Details : This isn't the sort of thing I would typically read, yet I wanted to read it because I felt that anyone who considers themselves a history buff as I do should read it. This really is one of those classic books worth a read I would gather that the other books are of similar quality ( Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jamie’s Reviews -- Very good reference books and interesting aspects about Christianity during this Period : This is a very concise History of the decline and fall of the Roman Empire. Volume 1 of 6! Everything you need to know about this topic are in these books. To be honest, I browsed through the editions, and found some interesting snippets. Not books I will tend to read from front to back over a weekend... reference books. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 30, 2020 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from karen smith -- Very interesting and informative. : This was a very interesting book and easier to read than I expected. The only difficulty I had with it was keeping track of the sheer numbers of ‘characters.’ The lifespan of a Roman emperor appears to have been only slightly longer than a Conservative manifesto promise! - 3.0 out of 5 stars from D. -- random volume printing : This is not a compliant about the work, which is amazing, but of this particular edition. Being that no volume is specified clearly on the product description or title, one would expect this to be either the first volume in the series or some sort of abridgement. However, it is neither. This is the FOURTH volume in the series. I don't know if they intend to sell the fourth volume only without indicating it, or whether they print a random volume out of the 6 and send it away. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Martin Sowery -- don't let everyone telling you how good this is put you off : this is a book that tells the reader more about the current state of our democracies than any number of well meaning bloggers (like me) could describe. Anyone remotely interested in history, or just how societies work, needs to read it. To get it free (even though this edition is a bit scruffy in places) is an answer in itself to any sniffy reader who still claims that ebooks are not like real books. Surprisingly modern in outlook even though it's such an old book. Easy and fun to read and even when you think you've read other books about the decline and fall, they were probably based on this and lacking the intelligent asides and insights that make this journey so rewarding. A tiny example from one of Gibbon's digressions to explain Zoroastrianism (the religion of the Magi) where he quotes "he who sows the ground with care and diligence acquires a greater stock of religious merit than he could gain by the repetition of ten thousand prayers" described by the historian as " a wise and benevolent maxim which compensates for many an absurdity" Have to admit that I hadn't realized that the histories of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus were so close to the Ridley Scott version (no Russell Crowe here, but the mad emperor did fancy himself a gladiator).
